Hensel Phelps is proud to celebrate National Small Business Week and reinforce our commitment to building lasting relationships with small business trade partners across the country.

Hensel Phelps partners with small minority/disadvantaged, women, HubZone, veteran, service-disabled veteran and Source America-owned businesses to the highest possible degree on all of our projects. We hold our employees accountable for this cultural focus, and as a result of these efforts, have effectively established numerous long-term relationships with these trade partners and well exceeded all federal goals for inclusion over the last two years.

In 2017, Hensel Phelps exceeded the government’s small business spend percentage goal by 13%, dedicating over $753 million to contracts with small business partners. We also more than doubled their allocated goals for veteran-owned and service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses, awarding $200 million in subcontracts to these trade partners.

Working in conjunction with organizations such as the Small Business Association (SBA), Associated Building Contractors of America (ABC), Small Business Development Centers (SBDC), Defense Contract Management Agency (DCMA), and Procurement Technical Assistance Program (PTAP), Hensel Phelps has continuously connected small businesses with numerous valuable resources. Whether it is by providing mentoring opportunities, training, or bonding assistance, our staff regularly work to help these partners successfully manage and grow their organizations through our Small Business Programs.

As a leading general contractor within the industry, it is important that we set an example. Our professionals regularly reach out to small firms across the country, working hard to customize an overall plan for each construction project that enlists emerging businesses in our preconstruction, purchasing, and construction efforts. Hensel Phelps’ goal is to interact not only with local small business communities but also with elected officials and the surrounding neighborhoods to maximize opportunities for partnership.

In my role as our Corporate Director of Supplier Diversity, I work nationwide with each of our nine district offices to assure that we make every effort to support these small subcontractors’ growth through mutually beneficial partnerships. As you will see in the content we share over the remainder of this weeklong celebration, the end goal is genuinely to foster a healthy, competitive local business community where we all can thrive.
