About The Project
In 2017, the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southeast awarded Hensel Phelps the design-build P-154 Triton Forward Operating Base (FOB) Hangar at Mayport Naval Station (NS) in Jacksonville, FL. The support and maintenance facility is designed to maintain four Triton Unmanned Aircraft (UA). The project consisted of a 74,000 SF two-bay aircraft operation and maintenance hangar with associated maintenance shops, secure storage, administrative areas, and unsecured storage.
This facility was constructed as part of the Navy’s Triton Program which provides Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection (AT/FP) features and complies with AT/FP regulations. Site improvements include grading, paved parking for approximately 160 vehicles, access roads, landscaping, concrete access apron, taxiway, and launch recovery paving. The facility was designed to meet the base standards to mimic adjacent building colors and finishes. Each maintenance bay is equipped with overhead cranes and fire alarm/AFFF suppression systems.
The Triton Forward Operating Base Hangar is certified by the Green Building Initiative (GBI) Green Globe New Construction standards.
This project was constructed adjacent to an active military airfield where aircraft actively land and take off. Hensel Phelps closely coordinated with staff, trade partners, base operations, and other stakeholders to assure that no active operations were affected by construction.
